Postgame Report: Cleveland State at Milwaukee

Game #26 – Milwaukee 90, Cleveland State 78

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Angela Rodriguez was terrific. At the start of the game, when she wasn't scoring, she was continuously finding teammates with great passes for easy baskets. At one point, she had 9 assists and 0 turnovers when the game was still yet to be decided. She finished with 26 points and 10 assists for the fourth points/assists double-double of her career - and third this season.

Rodriguez joined Scott Warras following the contest as his "Star of the Game", hear that interview HERE.

Play of the Game: The game was back-and-forth from the start, with 10 lead changes in the first half alone. In case there was any doubt about the second half and the victory, the Panthers took care of it with - what else - the three-point shot. When CSU seemed to be giving things one final run in the second half, trimming the lead back under 10 for the final time - UWM responded with a triple from Emily Decorah and one from Rodriguez on back-to-back possessions to extend the lead back to 15 and take care of business.

Key Stats: The Panthers shot close to 50 percent and won a few key statistical areas. They tallied a 43-40 advantage in rebounds - the first time they won the rebounding battle in 9 games. They also had just 9 turnovers compared to 21 assists. The turnover story was key. They had just one in the first half and only a handful until the final minutes when the Vikings continued to press with the game out of hand.

News and Notes: Freshman Bre'Zall Warren set a career-high with 17 points - topping the former mark of 13 that she set twice earlier this season. Rodriguez netted 26 points to reach 1,501 in her career - just the 6th UWM player to score 1500-plus in program history.

Up Next: It's off to Ohio for a final matchup against Wright State, a team that just happens to now be part of the three-way tie at the top of the Horizon League standings at 9-3.

Postgame Report: Valparaiso at Milwaukee

Game #20 – Milwaukee 85, Valparaiso 80

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Avyanna Young. Incredible. Ridiculous. Fun to watch. Valpo had no answer for her and she was on fire all day. The 36 point-effort is one of the best I have seen in years.

Young joined Scott Warras following the contest as his "Star of the Game", hear that interview HERE.

Play of the Game: The Panthers seemed to have the game in control all day, but could never pull away from the Crusaders even after building the lead to as many as 11. Valpo actually rallied in the second half and tied the game on 3 occasions - at 56, 58 and 60. Emily Decorah's swished 3 from the corner on the next possession turned the tide and started UWM on its winning run that put the game away for good.

Key Stats: The Panthers shot over 50 percent for the game for the first time this season. They made 29-of-53, 54.7 percent. Milwaukee only had 8 turnovers in the game, second-fewest in school history.

News and Notes: Sophomore Jordyn Swan earned the first start of her UWM career today. She started impressively, collecting 2 points, 2 rebounds and an assist before the first media timeout. Angela Rodriguez made 8 more free throws today and has now made 39 in a row. She has not missed since before Christmas (for real!).

Up Next: It's off to Michigan for a two-game road swing to Oakland and Detroit.

Postgame Report: Detroit at Milwaukee

Game #18 – Milwaukee 81, Detroit 69

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: The team had quite the balanced scoring attack, with 10 of the 11 players finding their way to the scoring column, four in double-figures and seven with 7-plus points. Kimee Chandler made the most of her 13 minutes of playing time, tying her career-high with 10 points in an efficient 4-of-5 shooting - which included 2-of-3 from distance. She also added a rebound and an assist.

Chandler was the pick on the radio and joined Scott Warras following the contest as his "Star of the Game", hear that interview HERE.

Play of the Game: Not necessarily a single play, but hands-down, it was the 20-2 run. The Panthers led all game and, all of a sudden, a few minutes into the second half, Detroit rips off a 16-6 run and UWM found itself down 2. Such a great, composed response.

Key Stats: The Panthers played great defense and limited the Titans to 33.3 percent shooting in the game, including just 15 percent (2-of-14) from long-distance against a good-shooting 3-point team. They also held Senee Shearer, one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in league history - to a 1-for-9 showing from long range.

News and Notes: In addition to Chandler tying her career-high, Bre'Zall Warren also tied her career-best with 13 points. Not known for its shot-blocking capabilities, the Panthers had 6 today, which was a season-high (previous best was 4).

Up Next: It's back at the Klotshce Center Wednesday, welcoming the Flames for a 7 p.m. tip.

Postgame Report: Milwaukee at Green Bay

Game #14 – Milwaukee 75, Green Bay 64

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Angela Rodriguez was everywhere for the Panthers Saturday. The steady senior scored a team-high 23 points and seemed to come up with the big shot or big pass (8 assists) when needed. Most importantly, she had just three turnovers on the day - NONE in the second half.

Rodriguez was the pick on the radio and joined Scott Warras following the contest as his "Star of the Game", hear that interview HERE.

Kyle Rechlicz also joined Warras on the postgame show. What did she have to say after Milwaukee finally broke that 17-game streak against the Phoenix? You'll have to listen HERE.

Play of the Game: Two things stand out dramatically for me. The first was the 11-0 run to start the second half. Here was a team that was down 9, playing in Green Bay and could have folded up shop. No chance. They blitzed back into the lead and did it in less then 3 minutes. You could sense right then and there that the game was UWM's.

The other was Emily Decorah. Green Bay's defensive plan really took her out of the contest. In fact, she did not even have a field goal attempt in the game until there were less than 7 minutes to play. But, with about 2:30 to go, just when Green Bay had cut the deficit back under 10, just when it was time to sink or swim, Decorah nailed a big 3 from the corner and the game was OVER.

Key Stats: The Panthers have now won 3 of their last 4 and have done it with defense that was not part of the game earlier this season. Today they held GB to 27 second-half points and 38.3 percent shooting. More importantly, the Phoenix went just 4-for-32 on three-pointers.

News and Notes: The win was the first for Milwaukee in the series since February of 2006, a span of 17 games. If you look at the most recent matchups, not many of them have even been that close on the final scores. Green Bay had won (in reverse order), by margins of victory for the Phoenix have been 24, 25, 46, 35, 18, 48, 24, 11, 21, 24, 10 and 11 before finally playing a close one in 2008 - a 66-65 loss. For perspective, the seniors on the UWM roster currently did not even have their drivers licenses the last time UWM beat Green Bay.

Up Next: It's off to Ohio to continue the hot streak, starting with Cleveland State Thursday.

Postgame Report: Milwaukee at Omaha

Game #13 – Milwaukee 68, Omaha 48

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Three players accounted for HUGE games, each in their own way. Angela Rodriguez netted 19 points and had 6 assists (to 1 turnover), making 5-of-8 shots from the floor and all 6 of her free throws. Avyanna Young was at it again with another double-double and Ashley Green stuffed the statsheet with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals.

Green was the pick on the radio and joined Scott Warras following the contest as his "Star of the Game", hear that interview HERE.

Play of the Game: For me it actually happened early. Bre Warren's 3-pointer at the 1:00 mark of the first gave UWM its first lead of the day and helped them overcome that 11-point deficit in the first half. It seemed to give the team the positive energy it needed and the "know" of being able to pull the game out.

Key Stats: The Panthers won despite missing 15 shots in a row in the first half. They went 1-for-19 in a 10:20 stretch in the first when they fell behind 21-10. UWM came into the game averaging just 3.6 steals but had a season-best 13 today, previous season-high was just six.

News and Notes: Ashley Green became the first UWM player to have at least 5 steals in 52 games (Green vs. Seattle 2/1/12). The last UWM player with three-straight double-doubles was Sami Tucker in November of 2011. Young will go for 4 in a row next week at Green Bay. This was the first 20-point win since beating Chicago State in the season opener last year.

Up Next: It's the first Horizon League game of the year, at Green Bay next week Saturday. Tip is 1 p.m.

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. Illinois State

Game #10 – Milwaukee 73, Illinois State 58

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Sophomore Avyanna Young put on a show, scoring 18 points and tying her career-high with 16 rebounds. She seemed to be everywhere on the court and continues to improve each game in her sophomore season.

Young joined Scott Warras on the radio following the contest as his "Star of the Game", hear that interview HERE.

Play of the Game: Illinois State kept sticking around and, even after Milwaukee had built the lead to double-digits on numerous occasions, was still hanging around when UWM converted just 55 percent of its free throws down the stretch. The Redbirds trimmed the deficit to 7 at at 60-53, but Decorah buried her fifth three-pointer of the day that started a final 10-2 run to ice it.

Key Stats: The Panthers held Illinois State to just 30.6 percent shooting and 2 of 21 on three's. The great defense kept the point total to a season-low 58 for opponents and UWM won the rebounding battle for the first time in 6 games at 45-43. All keys to a big win.

News and Notes: The Panthers made 9 more three-pointers on the day, led by a season-high 5 in the game by Decorah. Angela Rodriguez continues her strong season in the assist column. She started the day leading the Horizon League at 6.0 per game and had 7 more today.

Up Next: It's off Drake for the final game of the 2013 portion of the schedule next week Sunday.

Postgame Report: Milwaukee at Indiana

Game #9 – Milwaukee 68, Indiana 87

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: It could go to either of the leading scorers for the Panthers, as both Emily Decorah and Avyanna Young had 15. But I will roll with Decorah, since it was her best game of the season to date after coming offf the injury. She played a season-high 27 minutes off the bench and looked her usual self from long-distance, canning 4-of-8 of her 3-point attempts.

Play of the Game: In a game like this, one key Hoosier scoring run essentially set the tone. When Milwaukee had cut the lead to 3 at 27-24, IU took a timeout and it made a huge difference. Coming back out of the TO, they went on a 17-4 run that essentially decided the outcome.

Key Stats: The Panthers shot a respectable 43.3 percent, but could not stop the Hoosiers, who connected on half of their shots (33-66) on the night. Freshman Larryn Brooks plays above her age level and went crazy from distance, burying 7 of her 9 attempts from 3-point range on her way to a game-high 27 points.

News and Notes: Young grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds to once again lead the squad. The potent UWM 3-point attack seems to be back in full swing, especially with a healthy Decorah on the court. After making 10-or-more 3's in a game just once in its first four games of the year, the Panthers have made 10, 11, 10, 9 and 10 3's the past five contests.

Up Next: It's back to Wisconsin Sunday and a return to the Klotsche Center for a crosstown showdown with Marquette. The televised contest gets underway at 1 p.m.

Saturday, November 30, 2013

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. New Mexico State

Game #6 – Milwaukee 84, New Mexico State 81

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Angela Rodriguez was brilliant, tying her career high with 30 points. She came up with big shots all game long and finished 10-for-10 from the line for one of the best 100% performances on free throws in program history. But, Macie Dorow's effort cannot be overlooked either. She got the first start of the season, blwoing past her previous career-high of 7 points already by halftime (she has 12) and tying her career-best with 5 rebounds.

The due joined Scott Warras on the radio following the contest as his "Stars of the Game", hear that interview HERE.

Play of the Game: There were a lot of key plays, but the biggest in my eyes was the 4 free throws shot by Sydney Snower in the final 79 seconds. UWM trailed by 1 the first time she was fouled and calmly made both to put UWM back ahead. She made two more with 11 seconds left that pushed the lead back to 3. Not only were those her only 4 attempts on the day, but those were her first four tries from the charity stripe on the season.

Key Stats: The Panthers shot a season-high 47.4 percent on the day and sank half of their 3's with 11 makes on 22 tries. The Pan Am Center was a good spot for UWM to find its long-range groove, making 11 today and 10 yesterday against Lamar.

News and Notes: Avyanna Young grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 10 points to record her second career double-double. The team technically grabbed a share of the weekend tournament crown as all 4 teams finished 1-1.

Up Next: It's back to Wisconsin tomorrow and a return to the Klotsche Center Wednesday for an early 11 a.m. tip.

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. North Dakota State

Game #3 – Milwaukee 76, North Dakota State 64

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Sophomore Avyanna Young continues to post dominating stats lines so far in 2013-14 and today was no different. She scored over 20 points for the second-straight game, tying her career-high with 22 points and just missing a double-double with 9 rebounds.

Young joined Scott Warras on the radio following the contest as his "Star of the Game", hear that interview HERE.

Play of the Game: It was back-and-forth at the start, but when the Panthers turned a 10-7 deficit into am 18-10 lead in the first with an 11-0 run it was all over.

Key Stats: The Panthers shot the ball well on the day, finishing at 44.1 percent in the game and 54.2 percent in the second half despite hitting just 23.5 percent of their three's. Also, the team had just 11 turnovers compared to 13 assists.

News and Notes: Milwaukee battled to an even 43-43 edge on the boards despite a much smaller lineup for most of the day against the Bison.

Up Next: It's off to New Mexico for the holiday week, starting with a visit to "THE PIT" Tuesday.

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. Wisconsin

Game #1 – Milwaukee 60, Wisconsin 85

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: For the Panthers, Angela Rodriguez brought her "A-game" against the Badgers, finishing with a team-high 18 points. She was 7-18 from the floor and 4-5 from the FT line.

Look at those Freshmen: A pair of freshman made their collegiate debuts and the final numbers were nice. Bre'Zall Warren finished with 11 points, 3 rebounds and a pair of assists. Christina Wakeman made a statement with 9 points and 7 rebounds despite the fact that she played just 16 minutes. Sydney Snower also made her debut, scoring three points and grabbing a pair of boards in four minutes

Coach's Take: Head coach Kyle Rechlicz joined Scott Warras on the radio following the contest, hear that interview HERE.

Play of the Game: Milwaukee gave the Badgers all they could handle for 25-plus minutes, but could not overcome that 16-2 run that gave UW an insurmountable 55-37 lead.

Key Stats: Despite a clear size disadvantage, UWM hung with the Badgers on the boards and only trailed the final rebound count by a 52-46 tally. The Panthers also had 32 points in the paint.

News and Notes: The Panthers set a program record for fewest turnovers per game last season and picked up right where they left off, finishing with just nine turnovers on the night. Milwaukee's potent three-point attack could never get going, finishing 3-16 from long distance, clearly missing Emily Decorah who did not play tonight.

Up Next: UWM stays at home and welcomes Western Illinois to the Klotsche Center Sunday, starting at 2 p.m.

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. UIC

Game #27 – Milwaukee 72, UIC 63

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: The SENIORS came to play. Sami Tucker set a career-high with 16 rebounds, which was the highest single-game rebound total since February of 2010, a span of 91 games. She added 8 points and 4 assists. Sammy Theut tied her career-high with 12 points, including four very important ones - a nifty one-on-one layup and pair of free throws - in the final minute to give UWM the game.

Theut joined radio play-by-play announcer Scott Warras after the game as his player of the game. Listen to her comments HERE.

Play of the Game: You have to give it to Theut. Milwaukee had built a late lead to as many as 13 with about 5 minutes to play, only to see UIC back within 5 in the final minute. Her layup with 50 seconds pushed it back to 7 and then a pair of free throws just 17 seconds later put it out of reach.

News and Notes: Tucker upped her career rebound total to 754, moving past Erica Young (was fourth with 751). She could still pass Lindsay Laur (third with 791) on the career charts before the end of the season. The start was also the 100th of her UWM career, making her one of about 15 players to accomplish that all-time. Emily Decorah made 5 more 3's tonight, giving her 91 on the year to trail the all-time school (and Horizon League) record of 93 set by Jess Wilhite back in 2000-2001. She'll have at least 2 games to break it.

Up Next: The Panthers close out the regular season with "Senior Day" against Green Bay. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. against the Phoenix.

Postseason: While I am officially waiting for the Horizon League office to send out the "bullet-proof" scenarios before I go on the record with anything, the seeds from 5 thru 9 are certainly, shall we say, interesting.

5. Wright State 6-10
T6. Milwaukee 5-10
T6. UIC 5-10
8. Cleveland State 5-11
9. Valparaiso 4-11

The Panthers would like to stay out of the 8-9 mix, as the winner of that game heads to No. 1 Green Bay. It certainly appears that they are. They hold the 2-0 tie-breaker over CSU, so that helps. The best they could get would be 6-10 with a win over GB, but WSU holds that tie-breaker. If UWM, Valpo and CSU all end 5-11, Milwaukee wins that tie-break and would be the 7 seed. I will pass on the official word from the HL office as soon as I get it.

Postgame Report: Milwaukee at Wright State

Game #24 – Milwaukee 74, Wright State 61

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Tough choice. Angela Rodriguez was whistled for 2 fouls in the first 90 seconds and appeared that may have an impact on her night. However, she responded with 19 points, netting No. 1,000 late in the contest. But, Sami Tucker also had a brilliant night, scoring 18 points and tying her career-high with 14 rebounds. You pick.

Tucker joined radio play-by-play announcer Scott Warras after the game as his player of the game. Listen to her comments HERE.

Play of the Game: In all honesty, besides the fact that it was her 1,000th point, the three that Rodriguez hit came at a huge spot in the game. WSU had tried numerous times to get back in it and her back-to-back 3's (the first one was #1,000) were the cap of 8 in a row by UWM and pushed the lead back to 12.

News and Notes: With Rodriguez joining Tucker in the 1,000-point club, it marks the first time in program history that UWM has had two players cross the milestone in the same season. Milwaukee keeps shooting - and making - three's at a historic level. The Panthers broke school records for 3's made and 3's attempted tonight - and still have at least 5 games to add to the totals.

Up Next: Next up, the Panthers remain on the road once again, traveling down to Chicago for a contest against Loyola Thursday. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.

Friday, February 22, 2013

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. Valparaiso

Game #23 – Milwaukee 75, Valparaiso 71

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: With four players in double-figures, makes it tough to pick one (but that's a good problem to have), but I will roll with Emily Decorah and her 15 points. She made 5 more 3's and had back-to-back makes with about 4 minutes left that thwarted an earlier Valpo run.

She joined radio play-by-play announcer Scott Warras after the game as his player of the game. Listen to her comments HERE.

Play of the Game: When you are up 13 (70-57) with 81 seconds to play, there shouldn't usually be any concern. However, Valpo went on a crazy 14-3 run that made it a 2-point game with 9 seconds left. Angela Rodriguez took care of business, swishing a pair of free throws with 5.0 on the clock to end the comeback bid.

News and Notes: Rodriguez finished with 15 points, upping her career total to 984. She will go for the 1,000 against the Raiders ... The team made 12 more 3's Thursday, the 9th time this season they have made 10 or more ... freshman Jordyn Swan scored a season-high 9 points, all on 3's ... Decorah now has 74 made 3's on the year, closing in on the record of 93 ... the victory marked back-to-back wins for the Panthers for the first time this season and the first time since beating Butler (Feb. 23) and Valpo (Feb. 25) last season.

Up Next: After an adventure on the roads with the winter weather, Milwaukee is headed to Ohio for a Saturday matinee against Wright State, set for a 3:30 p.m. CST tip-off.

Saturday, February 16, 2013

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. Cleveland State

Game #22 – Milwaukee 73, Cleveland State 72

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Tough to pick just one as so many people played key roles in the win over Cleveland State. Janna Swopshire came up with one of her biggest moments of her UWM career when she hit the game-winner. But, at the end of the day, the Panthers would not have been able to pull out the victory without the all-around play of Angela Rodriguez. She led the way with 16 points but also dished out a season-high 9 assists.

Rodriguez joined radio play-by-play announcer Scott Warras after the game as his player of the game. Listen to her comments HERE.

Play of the Game: It goes to Swopshire. With 20 seconds left, UWM inbounded down one. Rodriguez passes to Tucker, who found Janna down low in the post. With her back to the basket and double-teamed she willed the shot in and it held up for the victory.

News and Notes: The bench kicked in with 26 points, the third-highest total of the season. Avyanna Young (9 points, 4 boards) and Jordyn Swan (6 points) both hit for season-highs. With a team-best 9 boards today, Sami Tucker went over 700 for her career. She is just the seventh player to accomplish that feat in UWM history.

Up Next: It’s back on the road for a tilt with Valparaiso, scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. Loyola

Game #17 – Milwaukee 74, Loyola 84

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: With four players in double-figures, it provides plenty of choices. Sami Tucker had a nice double-double - the 11th of her career - finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Emily Decorah had a nice night, setting a career-high with 17 points. But my selection goes to Janna Swopshire. Off the bench, she set a career-high with 13 points (previous was 11) on 5-8 shooting, while adding 3 rebounds and 4 assists in just 19 minutes of action.

Play of the Game: The contest was a game of runs, but Loyola's at the end was the difference. The Ramblers scored the final 15 points of the game after Milwaukee had taken a 74-69 lead with about three minutes to play. Loyola made all 5 field goals and 6 free throws it attempted over the final 3:09.

Key Stats: Plenty of positives with the career-highs by Decorah and Swopshire. With two players recording double-doubles, it marks the first time UWM has accomplished that feat on the same night since February 12 of 2011 - a span of 53 games. Milwaukee also recorded a dominant advantage on the boards, winning that battle 42-30. The team also made 11 3's to once again finish with 10 or more.

Up Next: The team continues Horizon League play Saturday, welcoming Detroit in a 2 p.m. tipoff.

Thursday, January 24, 2013

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. Valparaiso

Game #16 – Milwaukee 72, Valparaiso 84

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Not only did Ashley Green pace the Panthers with 21 points, but she became the 33rd player in school history to top 500 points. After just a year and a half in a UWM uniform, she already has 508 points. She added 6 boards and was 8-8 from the line.

And then, on the other side of the court, Valpo's Tabitha Gerardot had 22 points by the half and finished with a career-high 33.

Play of the Game: The play of the game was a series of them, as Valpo got hot and UWM went cold at the wrong time. The Crusaders closed the first half on a big run that ended up being a 27-5 streak after the scored the first 9 points in the second.

Key Stats: Valpo outscored UWM 42-16 in the paint. Huge difference. And, oh yeah, it shot 50.9% from the floor for the game, it's second-highest of the season.

Up Next: The team is off for a week, hosting Loyola next week Thursday.

Postgame Report: Women’s Basketball In Ohio

Game #15 – Milwaukee 63, Cleveland State 60

Full Recap and Stats

Game #14 – Milwaukee 50, Youngstown State 67

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Tough to pick just one as so many people played key roles in the win over Cleveland State. You could give it to Angela Rodriguez and her team-high 19 points and six assists. Or you could go with Emily Decorah and her 5 threes. Sammy Theut and her 9 points – including the final go-ahead bucket – would also be a worthwhile nominee. I would argue you could even give it to Jordyn Swan – who played less than a few seconds but changed the end of the game and secured the victory.

Well, it was the senior Theut who joined radio play-by-play announcer Scott Warras after the game as his player of the game. Listen to her comments HERE.

On Thursday, Decorah was the only player in double-figures, leading the team in points (14) and rebounds (5).

1,000: Sami Tucker scored her 1,000th point on a free throw late in the YSU game to become the 17th player to do so in Milwaukee program history. Look for her to be honored pregame in an upcoming home contest.

See her 1,000th point HERE.

Play of the Game: It was a back-and-forth all afternoon, so the turning point did not happen until late – and it almost didn’t happen. Down one with under 30 seconds remaining, Rodriguez dribbled into the lane and nearly lost the ball. It just happened to go to Theut – the right place at the right time, they say – for the game-winner. Angela even got extra-credit of an assist on the play in the box score.

At YSU, Milwaukee led early but it was a stretch of 3-point makes by the Penguins in the middle of the first half that opened things up. They just continued to build from there in the second half.

News and Notes: Kimee Chandler had a career-high 5 assists at Youngstown. The team had two long streaks come to an end on the trip – one bad, one good. They lost to YSU to snap what was a 15-game winning streak in the series, but also won at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland for the first time since January of 2006. Ashley Green grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds despite playing only 23 minutes due to foul trouble. That marks the third game of her career with 10 or more boards.

Up Next: It’s back to the Klotsche Center for a tilt with Valparaiso, scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Thursday. If you can’t get there, don’t worry, it will also be on Time Warner Cable Sports 32.

Thursday, January 10, 2013

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. Wright State

Game #13 – Milwaukee 61, Wright State 71

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: An easy one on UWM's side, as Sami Tucker turned in one of her best performances of the season. She finished with a double-double of 17 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. The double-double was the first of the season for her and the 10th of her career. She had an outside chance of scoring #1,000 at home, finishing the night at 993.

And then, on the other side of the court, Horizon League preseason Player of the Year Kim Demmings showed off her game, finishing with a season-high 35 points.

Play of the Game: The play of the game was a span of 42 seconds. In the final 42 ticks of the first half, WSU broke open a close game and built a 10-point halftime cushion by scoring the final 7 in a row, including Demmings impressive 3-pointer at the intermission buzzer. That 10-point margin was the same at the end.

Key Stats: It's hard to complain about 11 turnovers in a game, but those 11 miscues somehow led to a 22-5 advantage for Wright State in points off turnovers. Also, UWM made five 3's in the first half, but went cold from distance in the second, sinking just 1-of-11.

News and Notes: The five UWM starters all played at least 30 minutes, with totals of 36 (Tucker, Rodriguez), 34 (Decorah) and 30 (Green and Theut) all adding up. Theut's 6 rebounds tied her career-high.

Up Next: The team is off for a week, heading to Ohio for a clash with Youngstown State next week Thursday.

Postgame Report - Detroit and Wright State

The Panthers dropped their first two league road games of the season this past weekend but actually showed some positive signs in the contests. Milwaukee led by as many as six points against Detroit before being overwhelmed by a 21-4 run in the second half. Saturday in Dayton, the Panthers led most of the way before a late Wright State surge allowed the Raiders to pull out the win.

Player Of The Game(s): Two different guys share the honors for the weekend. Paris Gulley was the star of Thursday night, knocking in six 3-pointers on his way to 22 points. Then Saturday it was Demetrius Harris playing perhaps his best game as a Panther. He tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals and was extremely active on both ends of the floor.

Turning Point: Thursday night, the Panthers had a 37-36 lead and were still tied 40-all before scoring only four points in the next eight-plus minutes. Then Saturday, the Panthers had a number of opportunities to extend their advantage late in the second half but a combination of some missed free throws and untimely turnovers kept Milwaukee from building more of a cushion.

News and Notes: Demetrius Harris tallied his second double-double of the season Saturday with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Panthers now have six double-doubles this year … Paris Gulley has now had 20 or more points four times … UWM used just seven players Thursday night, its smallest rotation of the season. And, Milwaukee played at least eight guys in every game a season ago. Twelve players have played at least 10 of the 16 games this year … UWM held Wright State to just 41.5 percent shooting from the field, the lowest for an opponent since Northern Illinois shot 39.7 percent in early December … the Panthers saw a five-game winning streak in league openers snapped in the loss to Detroit but is still 10-3 in its last 13 openers … the Panthers had 16 offensive rebounds Thursday night and have had 16 or more in three of their last five games. UWM added 10 offensive rebounds Saturday and has been in double figures in offensive rebounds in 11 of the first 16 games of the season … Milwaukee has now lost eight-straight times in Dayton … the Panthers are now 0-8 in true road games and 0-10 in contests outside of Milwaukee this season.

Up Next: UWM gets a full week of before hosting Valparaiso Saturday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.

Postgame Report: Milwaukee vs. Drake

Game #12 – Milwaukee 70, Drake 80

Full Recap and Stats

Player Of The Game: Well, I will leave it up to the reader on this one ... Ashley Green led the way with a game-high 23 points and added 7 boards, 3 blocks and a pair of steals. Angela Rodriguez was right behind with 22 points and recorded 5 boards and 4 assists. You make the call!

Play of the Game: The play of the game just always seemed to be "waiting" to happen. Every time UWM made a run in the second half, Drake responded. The Panthers could just never get over the hump. They cut the deficit to 7 late in the game with 7 in a row, but the Bulldogs answered with 7 of their own to regain control.

Key Stats: UWM made 7 more 3's on the day, but came up with just 2 makes in 12 tries from distance in the second half. Also, 17 turnovers was not a huge number but seemed to come at very inopportune times.

News and Notes: The Panthers did make at least one three (they had 7) to extend their streak of consecutive games with at least one to an impressive 312 in a row. Another extremely lengthy streak nearly came to an end. UWM did not have a made free throw until Avyanna Young made the team's only successful charity stripe toss with just 29.7 seconds left IN THE GAME (UWM finished 1-for-3). In the team's NCAA D-I history, it has never gone an entire game without one (over 650 games in a row!).

Up Next: The team is off until January 10, tipping off Horizon League play when it hosts Wright State in a 7 p.m. start. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!
