Final Men's Basketball Numbers

With the men's college basketball season officially coming to a close Monday night with Louisville's championship victory, now is as good of a time as any to review some final individual stats and numbers for the 2012-13 Milwaukee Panthers.

UWM actually landed a pair of players in the top 10 in the Horizon League for scoring, with Paris Gulley finishing sixth in the league (14.7 ppg) and Jordan Aaron finishing eighth (14.4). Aaron also finished seventh in assists (4.0), sixth in three-pointers made (2.1) and 10th in steals (1.3). Meanwhile, Gulley was also seventh in three-pointers made (2.0). The duo was also at the top in minutes played, with Gulley leading the league (37.0) and Aaron third (35.6).

Aaron's 34 points against Ohio Dominican wound up tied for the second-most in a single game by a league player, while Aaron had two of the seven 10-plus assist performances in the league.

Demetrius Harris also appeared in the final overall rankings, sitting ninth in field goal percentage (46.9), second in offensive rebounds (2.2) and sixth in blocks (1.0). J.J. Panoske finished tied for third in blocks (1.4).

A few season performances also made the Panther record book. Panoske's 41 total blocks set a new single-season school record, besting the 40 Ryan Allen had a season ago. Aaron played 1,140 minutes, the second-most in a single season in UWM's Division I history. Plus, Aaron's 128 assists wound up just outside of the top five, with Ricky Franklin's 132 in 2009-10 ranking fifth.

Horizon League Men's Basketball Tiebreakers

2013 Horizon League Men’s Basketball Tournament Scenarios Operating Regulation 8.8.5.1.2 - Men’s Basketball Tie-Breaking Formula:

If two tied teams met twice during the regular season and one of the two won both games, the winner shall be awarded the higher seed.

If two tied teams split in two games during the regular season, compare each team’s record against the team occupying the highest position in the standings and continue down through the standings until one team gains the advantage, thereby winning the higher position.

If three or more teams are tied, compare the combined record of each of the tied teams against the other teams involved in the tie until an advantage is gained. (Example: Team A’s combined record against both Team B and Team C as compared to Team B’s combined record against both A and C, etc.)

If the provision of (3) above fail to resolve a tie involving three or more teams, compare each of the tied team’s records against the team occupying the highest position in the standings and continue down through the standings until the tie is reduced to a two-team tie, at which time revert to items (1) and (2) above or until the tie is broken.

If the above provisions fail to resolve a tie, the team with the higher RPI for that season will receive a higher seed (source for RPI: Collegiate Basketball News).

Clay Tucker Back In Europe

Clay Tucker has officially singed with Hacettepe University in Turkey.

Tucker was with Valencia Basket in Spain earlier this year before returning to the U.S.

The move further extends a long and successful career for Tucker in Europe. The 2003 Horizon League Tournament MVP and UWM’s all-time leading scorer played last season for Lottomatica Roma in the Italian SerieA, averaging 15.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game. That came after Tucker played for Real Madrid in Spain in 2010-11. There, he averaged 8.5 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game in 40 regular season outings, helped his team to the league final. Tucker also played 23 games in Euroleague, averaging nearly nine points per game and helping Real Madrid into the semifinals.

Tucker has played also professionally in France (Le Mans), Greece, Poland, Russia (Khimky), Sweden, Ukraine (BC Kyiv), Spain (FIATC Joventut and Cajasol), Italy (BancaTercas) and in the D-League (Arkansas RR).

He remains highly respected in Europe, according to the latest EuroBasket scouting report.

“An athletic guard who can shoot from the perimeter and score on penetration. Passes the ball very well, defends exceptionally well on the passing lines. Has now matured to a team leader, wants the ball in clutch moments of the game and is a good rebounder for his size. Ready for top European teams.”

Postgame Report - Detroit and Wright State

The Panthers dropped their first two league road games of the season this past weekend but actually showed some positive signs in the contests. Milwaukee led by as many as six points against Detroit before being overwhelmed by a 21-4 run in the second half. Saturday in Dayton, the Panthers led most of the way before a late Wright State surge allowed the Raiders to pull out the win.

Player Of The Game(s): Two different guys share the honors for the weekend. Paris Gulley was the star of Thursday night, knocking in six 3-pointers on his way to 22 points. Then Saturday it was Demetrius Harris playing perhaps his best game as a Panther. He tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals and was extremely active on both ends of the floor.

Turning Point: Thursday night, the Panthers had a 37-36 lead and were still tied 40-all before scoring only four points in the next eight-plus minutes. Then Saturday, the Panthers had a number of opportunities to extend their advantage late in the second half but a combination of some missed free throws and untimely turnovers kept Milwaukee from building more of a cushion.

News and Notes: Demetrius Harris tallied his second double-double of the season Saturday with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Panthers now have six double-doubles this year … Paris Gulley has now had 20 or more points four times … UWM used just seven players Thursday night, its smallest rotation of the season. And, Milwaukee played at least eight guys in every game a season ago. Twelve players have played at least 10 of the 16 games this year … UWM held Wright State to just 41.5 percent shooting from the field, the lowest for an opponent since Northern Illinois shot 39.7 percent in early December … the Panthers saw a five-game winning streak in league openers snapped in the loss to Detroit but is still 10-3 in its last 13 openers … the Panthers had 16 offensive rebounds Thursday night and have had 16 or more in three of their last five games. UWM added 10 offensive rebounds Saturday and has been in double figures in offensive rebounds in 11 of the first 16 games of the season … Milwaukee has now lost eight-straight times in Dayton … the Panthers are now 0-8 in true road games and 0-10 in contests outside of Milwaukee this season.

Up Next: UWM gets a full week of before hosting Valparaiso Saturday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.

Postgame Report - Milwaukee at South Carolina

Player Of The Game: Jordan Aaron took over the game on multiple occasions Sunday afternoon. He scored 12 points in the final five minutes of the first half to give UWM a 38-23 lead at the break, the poster another burst that allowed Milwaukee to respond to a big South Carolina run and re-establish a 51-36 lead. In all, Aaron had 28 points and six assists.

Turning Point: Milwaukee had an eight-point lead with four minutes remaining but would not score again in regulation. In fact, the Panthers did not strike again until over a minute into overtime.

Key Numbers: The foul line was the difference, as South Carolina converted on 26-of-31 while Milwaukee made just 9-of-19. The Gamecocks made all 12 of their tries in overtime.

News and Notes: This was Milwaukee first overtime loss since January of 2009 … UWM made 14 three-pointers and now has knocked in 27 in the first two games of the season … meanwhile, the Panthers have allowed opponents to make just 3-of-32 from three-point range, including the 0-of-11 effort from South Carolina Sunday … James Haarsma tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds for his first UWM double-double. It also marked the third time in his Panther career he reached double figures in rebounds … Jordan Aaron’s 28 points marked the most by a Panther since Anthony Hill scored 32 at UIC near the end of the 2010-11 campaign.

Up Next: UWM is back at the Klotsche Center Saturday night, hosting Davidson in a 7 p.m. contest.

Men's Soccer: Spring Game Report vs. DePaul

The Panthers have six games scheduled for the spring season, which began on April 1. Assistant coach Ben Shepherd will again take time to report on how each match went.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Friday night saw the team back under the lights of Engelmann Stadium, which represents such a unique atmosphere that everyone was ready to play and put on a good performance against a solid DePaul team from the Big East who made their conference playoffs this year. We were well aware that it would be a stern test.
Again, there was a healthy crowd in attendance, especially for a spring game, and it was good to see so many people coming out in support of the players which really was appreciated.
Since the Northwestern game (our spring opener), we were able to have 12 days to prepare and really work on certain aspects of our play which needed improvement, and the players responded well to a few new ideas and worked hard during this time to get ready for the game. The game started at a fast pace and we had some good spells of possession. Although at times we gave the ball away too often after transition and didn't connect with our first pass, which is something that we stress as a team.
DePaul, like any Big East Team, was well organized and and looked to counter quickly and capitalize on any mistake that we made by playing balls in behind us. On the whole, I thought we dealt with quite well. From the midpoint of the half I thought we really began to get a hold of the game and our midfield three of Jamie Bladen, Alex Megna and Laurie Bell began to take control. We started to play our possession based free-flowing game which we have been working on.
We went close through Laurie Bell, Cody Banks and Robbie Boyd without really testing DePaul's keeper enough and then one lapse of concentration at the back allowed a DePaul forward to be through on goal and he coolly slotted home from 12 yards out which meant we went in at half-time trailing 1-0; somewhat undeserved.
At halftime, we talked about keeping our belief and sticking to our way of playing and that the chances would come and early in the second half after a good spell of play, Robbie Boyd was played through on goal and was brought down just outside the box, which resulted in a free kick and red card and Cody Banks stepped up to bend a free kick over the wall and into the bottom corner to get us back on level terms.
With it being a spring game, both coaching staffs thought it was appropriate for DePaul to still play with 11 men to keep it a competitive game.
From this point on, as a team, I really felt we played well and passed the ball as well as we have for a long time. After a sequence of over 20 passes, Robbie Boyd nutmegged his defender on the end-line and put in a great cross which Cody Banks hammered home from 8 yards out to put us 2-1 ahead.
We continued to push forward and Alex Megna had two strikes from distance one which went close (and one not so close), and Laurie Bell was unlucky not to get on the end of a good through ball.
With around 15 minutes left, a clash of heads with a DePaul player left Adam Hutchinson requiring treatment which would later require stitches but he returned to the fray, head bandaged, although the boys said the look did nothing for his modeling career!!
With just under 10 minutes remaining, after defending a set-piece in our own box the ball broke for Jamie Ashcroft to burst forward on a counter attack reminding us of his supposed center forward days as a Youth Player and he played a good ball into Laurie Bell who found Kyle Neumann running in the left channel who fired across goal for Kevin Ferron to slide home after running fully 70 yards to get into the box to make the final score 3-1.
There were a lot of positives to come from the game and the win was well deserved for the boys, but more importantly was our overall performance as we tried to play good soccer and continued to work for one another. The starting line-up consisted of six freshman, and five of the starters were from Wisconsin with seven in total contributing to the win which was pleasing to see.
As a team, we played well and there were also some notable performances from individuals; Jamie Bladen for me had his best game in Milwaukee colors and looked the best player on the pitch, Cody Banks scored his two goals but his all round game was just as important and he was prepared to work for the team and put DePaul's defence under pressure especially in the second half which was pleasing and Kyle Neumann came off the bench and was able to impact the game and showed that he is listening, improving and developing as a player.
Again, the players would like to thank all those that showed up to the game and we look forward to seeing you this Wednesday when we play Cardinal Stritch in a 7 p.m. match up and hopefully we can get another good result and continue to take positive steps forward.
Final Basketball Numbers
With the conclusion of this season’s NCAA Tournament, the college men’s basketball season is officially complete. That means all national statistics are now final, and UWM has a pair of top-10 finishes.
Point guard Kaylon Williams finished ninth in the nation in assists per game, averaging 6.5 per contest. He also won the Horizon League assist title for the second-straight year, becoming the first player to lead the league in assists two years in a row since Martell Bailey (UIC) did it in 2002-03 and 2003-04. Plus, his 6.5 assist per game average is the highest since Javier Mendiburu (Green Bay) tallied 7.1 assists per contests in 2004-05. Williams finished the year with five 10-assist games this season, while there were only four others total around the rest of the league.
Meanwhile, UWM’s three-point defense was stellar all season long. The 29 percent tally for opponents finished eighth in the country and marks the first time the Panthers have ever held opponents below 30 percent from the three-point arc in a season. Milwaukee was also 58th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 62.5 points per game.
On the offensive end, the Panthers finished 45th nationally in three-point field goals made per game, averaging 7.8 per contest. That number was also second in the league. Plus, Tony Meier finished 87th nationally in three-pointers made per game.
Finally, with the NCAA’s official RPI has not yet been released, the final national polls show some of the tests the Panthers faced in their non-league schedule. In the coaches’ poll, Michigan State finished seventh, Marquette 10th and Wisconsin 12th. In the Associated Press poll, Michigan State was fifth, Marquette 11th and Wisconsin 14th.
Game #29 – Milwaukee 67, Fairfield 63
Cleveland State Recap and Stats
Fairfield Recap and Stats
Player Of The Weekend: A number of Panthers had a good week but Tony Meier really came through when it counted. His free throws with less than two seconds remaining won Tuesday’s game against Cleveland State and then he hit the clinching free throw in the win over Fairfield. He averaged 16.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in the two wins, making 60 percent of his shots from the field.
Key Stat: Milwaukee fell back to 59 percent in its win over Fairfield, but the 33-of-40 UWM hit from the foul line against Cleveland State was incredibly important.
News and Notes: UWM played without James Haarsma, Ryan Haggerty and Christian Wolf Saturday, with all three players at home with the flu … that meant Kyle Kelm returned to the starting lineup … Kaylon Williams also did not start because of the flu, giving Shaquille Boga his first career start … the Panthers are now 2-8 in BracketBusters contests … Tony Meier has now been in double figures in four-straight games ... Paris Gulley had 17 points Tuesday and 18 more Saturday. Game #27 – Wright State 70, Milwaukee 46
Detroit Recap and Stats
Player Of The Weekend: Tony Meier seemed to find his shooting touch a bit over the two games. He scored 17 points and made three 3-pointers against Detroit Friday and then added 10 more points Sunday. He has made five of his last nine from three-point range.
Key Stat: UWM’s offense never really sorted things out over the weekend. Friday it was the 25 turnovers that stunted the Panther attack. Then Sunday UWM shot just 31.8 percent from the floor.
Key Stat: Yes, Milwaukee made 12-of-23 from beyond the arc and that was clearly a key. But, perhaps more importantly in a close game, UWM converted on 15-of-18 from the foul line – a marked improvement from the 58 percent clip the Panthers entered the game at.
News and Notes: Gulley’s 20 points marked his second-highest output of the season. Player Of The Weekend: James Haarsma is continuing his consistent offensive play. In two low-scoring games, he averaged 11 points per contest and made 10 of his 17 shots from the floor.
Key Stat: Milwaukee has had its share of ups and downs shooting the ball this season, but the Panthers have had a knack for carving teams up when they make the extra pass. Saturday was no exception, as UWM patiently worked the ball for opens looks and knocked in 14-of-24 from long range.
Postgame Report - Green Bay at Milwaukee
Game #17 – Milwaukee 64, Green Bay 63
Full Recap and Stats
Player Of The Game: It is a tough choice as the Panthers got a variety of contributions. Kaylon Williams hit the game-winning shot and also had seven assists, plus Ryan Allen had a double-double. But where would the Panthers have been without Paris Gulley Saturday night?
