The 2018 Lanther Diaries: Entry No. 3

Hi everyone, it’s Sara again!!

I am writing to you from the bus on our way home from Detroit after our 1-0 victory over the Titans of Detroit Mercy, but I’ll save the details for later. Anyway, school and soccer has taken up most of your Lady Panther’s lives. Many of us have been spending all of are free time at study tables, the library, or our favorite coffee shops around town preparing for midterms. I prefer Starbucks myself, but many will argue Stone Creek is better. (Starbucks until the end!!!) But, when we are not studying we are of course on the field doing what we do best… winning!

Since last time we have talked, the team now has a 5-0 record in the Horizon League. Wednesday, September 26th we traveled to Green Bay for our third conference game, and we ended with a 4-0 victory. Goals came from Jelena, Schill, Phillpotts, and an own goal that you can give credit to Lolo for her dangerous cross in the box. This game also gave the opportunity for large majority of the Panther squad to see the field.

Later that week on Saturday, we were back home to take on Wright State. The visitors would put up a good fight, but nothing would stand in our way of getting another win. We went into halftime at an even score of 1-1, and after the break we found new energy to put two more in the back of the net and hold wright state to two goals. The final score ended 3-2 with goals from Haley Johnson, Jelena, and Lolo.

Now 4-0 in conference at the top of the table, we worked hard at practice to take on our next opponents of Detroit Mercy. We hit the road Friday morning, and after 8 hours of riding in the bus, we finally made it to the Motor City. Some of you are probably wondering what we possibly do to pass all that time on the bus, but don’t worry your Lanthers know how to pass the time. You might see some sleeping, watching movies, checking every and all social media, of course studying and doing homework, and some write blogs.

A team favorite is always a good game of Old Maid. This has led to many arguments, laughs, and the occasional accusation of cheating. (Gaby Z, it’s not my fault if someone is flashing their cards in my direction!) But finally, after all the time we have together, we finally make it to our destination ready to play some soccer.

So, Saturday morning we woke up to gloomy skies and stormy weather forecasts, but we did not let that stop us from getting pumped up for the afternoon’s game… Well, after hours of waiting in the Detroit visitors’ locker room, a decision was made that the game would be postponed until the next day. What would we do now? Taking advantage of the little bit of good weather left, we headed out on the field for a little training session. Training ended with a small game of Dutch Shooting Game. Those who are not familiar with this, it is a shooting drill that challenges your shooting and goalkeeping skills. What felt like the longest round we have ever played; Allie N came out victorious over Brooke, who had quite the comeback! The fun continued throughout the night (Sara says with sarcasm), we spent the rest of our night at TGI Friday’s. A miscommunication with the kitchen led to teammates waiting an extra hour for their dinner, but Marissa said the steak was worth the wait! Finally, we headed back to the hotel to rest up for game the next day.

Game day came, and your Lady Panthers were ready to play! The bus ride from the hotel to the field was accompanied by the regular game day playlists thanks to the musical genius of Gaby Z. Pumped up from the bus and with a good warm up, we were ready to play. First half ended tied at zero, but with high energy from the bench to the field, Lolo was able to score the only goal of the game off a beautiful service from Erin in the 56th minute. With only four games left in the season, we Lanthers have our minds set to continue our unbeaten league record as we take on Oakland on October 13th!!

I hope to see you all back at home next Saturday, and as always come back for another shot… with Petrone!

P.S.

I just wanted to add a little extra to the blog this week. I know it might seem like most of us have it all together and live such wonderful lives, but that is not always true. We all go through tough times and struggle with our own lives outside of soccer. It’s hard on the whole team when we see a teammate go through hard times. I ask you to please keep in your mind and hearts the Lady Panthers who are going through hard times, and I hope we all find strength to prosper not only as a team, but a family.

The 2018 Lanther Diaries: Entry No. 2

Hi everyone, it’s Sara again!!

A lot has happened since the last time I wrote to you all. School has started, and I apologize for not updating you all sooner. Don’t worry though, your Lady Panthers have been continuing with their winning season! Since we have last talked, we have gone on two road trips, both ending in winning results. The first trip sent us down to Macomb, Ill., to take on the Western Illinois. Due to the rainy weather, we had to play inside on turf, but that didn’t affect your Panthers from getting a winning result. A 3-1 win raised our spirits even more as we headed to Iowa to take on the Cyclones of Iowa State! One of our tougher opponents this season, we came in with lots of energy for a close game. The game was tight until the very end. Not until the 72nd minute did we score the first goal and soon Iowa State came back leading 2-1 until the 89th minute when McKaela scored to send us to overtime! The drama only started in OT when Iowa State missed a PK, and finally Jelena scored the game winner from Haley Johnson in the 98th minute!

After the exciting weekend, we headed back to Milwaukee for another week of practice in preparation for our first Horizon League conference game. After only 4 days back at home, we hit the road again to Youngstown, Ohio to take on the Penguins. After what felt like 16-hour bus ride, we finally arrived with only one thing on our minds, WIN!

We took a while to get going at the start of the game, but after a substitution and boost of team energy, Schill found the back of the net in the first half that would be the only goal score the whole game. With a record of 1-0 leading into conference and continuing our unbeaten streak, we headed back home with our next focus on cross-town rival Marquette!

Monday came along, and the team was buzzing all day with excitement for the big game. After the pounds of bug spray were applied (sorry Olivia for using it all), we took the field ready for what some say our most intense game of the season. First half ended 0-0, and we were ready to attack and score goals once the second half started. After an onslaught of shots and attack from us, Marquette was able to find their goal off a free kick with 17 minutes left in the game. Quickly, we shook our heads and started attacking again and again. We weren’t able to take advantage in the final minutes ending our unbeaten streak and leaving us with the first loss of the season.

As defeat sat with us for the first time in 27 games, we used it as a tool for inspiration and motivation to continue with nothing but success for the season. We bottled the angry, frustration, and heartache from the loss, and used our new energized, focused mindsets to ready us for our next conference game ahead.

Saturday night back under the lights of Englemann Stadium, a new refreshed Lanther team came out buzzing against the Flames of UIC. It only took 1 minute and 18 seconds for to score the first goal! The scoring didn’t stop there, and we found the net twice more to end the first half to end the first 3-1. To no surprise, the second half started as the first, we found the net for the last time in the 47th minute leading us to a 4-1 victory and a 2-0 record to start of the conference season.

Ending the week on a high note, your Lady Panthers look forward this week to two more conference match ups. Wednesday night we are heading up north to face Green Bay (hopefully we end in a better result than the Packers this week), and then we host Wright State on Saturday at 2 pm before the men’s team takes on Green Bay!

I can’t wait to see you all come out to support your Lanthers this weekend, and as always come back for another shot … with Petrone!

The 2018 Lanther Diaries: Entry No. 1

Hello Panther fans, and welcome to this year’s “Lanther Diaries” blog!

If you don’t know, my name is Sara Petrone, and I am a senior on the team from New Lenox, Ill. I am a history major with a minor in American Sign Language, and this year I will be your insider to all things Lanther Soccer!

It’s crazy to believe it has already been over a month since the team has returned to campus for another year of panther soccer! Preseason flew by with many days of what felt like never ending two a days, but your Lady Panthers worked hard and we all survived with help from teammates and dreams of a winning season! From the start of preseason, we were able to show off with two exhibition wins, but the real test came on August 17th during our home opener against Northern Illinois.

Before we kicked off the season, the team gathered for their own friendly competition in preparations for the following game day. The third annual hyrdo games were in full effect in Milwaukee!! Events involved the consumption of a large amount of water that would make any athletic trainer happy. Our team broke into five groups representing various countries around the world. Team Ireland came out with the big win of the night, but everyone was a winner at heart. I have attached some pictures, so you can enjoy our team spirit as much as the team did!

After the fun of the hydro games, it was time to ring in the season with a win! Going into the game Friday, we knew what needed to be done. Win! The game started, and we had no problem kicking off with a bang. In the 11th minute, Lolo started the scoring, then Haley Johnson found the net herself shortly after, and finally a goal by Kelli Swenson to end the scoring for the night. A great 3-0 start to our season!

The following week, we took on Eastern Illinois, and to no surprise your panthers were back at it winning! Another 3-0 win with goals by Erin, McKaela, and Chandler! With two wins, the team was ready to take on crosstown rival Marquette, but the weather had other plans. After two hours waiting in the locker room listening to the musical stylings of Gaby Z, playing hang man, and battling in many games of ninja, both teams agreed to reschedule the game for September 17th.

We moved forward and started to focus on our next battles ahead. Another two-game weekend at home was in front of us with Robert Morris on Friday and DePaul on Sunday. After a week of tough practices, the team came out to win again this weekend! Friday, the beautiful goal scored by McKenna off the cross from Schill gave us the edge to a 1-0 win, and it pumped the team to come into Sunday with an attitude to win again. As Sunday approached, your Lanthers were on the prowl for a win not only to put up more points, but an opportunity to tie the Horizon League’s all-time win streak (23-0-1).

From the kick off, we knew it was going to be our most challenging game yet. DePaul put up a good fight in the first half ending with no score, but this would not last long because in the 50th minute Haley Johnson put us on the board with a header off of Erin’s corner. This did not stop DePaul who came back and tied it up five minutes later, but your girls dug deep and Schill found the net again with less than 20 minutes left in the game. We were able to hold off the Blue Demons to come out with another winning result which allowed us to tie the Horizon League’s win streak of a record of 20-0-4.

This weekend we look ahead to extend our streak as we hit the road to Western Illinois and Iowa State! Come back next week to see how your Lanthers played and what crazy shenanigans happened on our first road trip of the year!!

See you all next week for another shot … with Petrone!

The Lanther Diaries: Entry No. 2

Hello lanther fans!!

A lot has happened since our last blog post. We apologize for the delay as we have been busy with the start of our semesters. We have played 8 games since our last post, resulting in 8 wins and 7 shutouts. On top of that, quite a few records have been broken. With the 7 shutouts, our flawless goalkeeper Mallory Geurts and backline broke the Milwaukee program record for longest scoreless streak (917:27 minutes). That’s 15 hours of playing without letting in a single goal. Wow. This streak is 9th ranked for the NCAA scoreless streak record. On top of that, Mal Geurts has become NCAA’s current leading goalkeeper with the most amount of shutouts (9!!). She has earned four Horizon League Defensive Player of the Weeks, so basically she’s been absolutely killing it!! Finally on an individual note, Aubrey Krahn, Anna Smalley, and Lolo Onwuemeka have all earned Horizon League Offensive Player of the Weeks!!

As a team, we have earned the sixth spot in the region, and have received nine votes for the NCAA national poll. Our record of 9-0-1 breaks the MKE program record for most unbeaten games to start the season. Finally, our latest 2-1 win over Marquette (ranked #19 at the time) was Milwaukee’s first time in 11 years to defeat a nationally-ranked opponent.

Well, with all of those recognitions aside, we have had such a fun start to the season off the field also. In August, we had our 2nd annual “Lanther Hydrolympics”!! We split up into six teams (Germany, USA, Brazil, Italy, Spain, and England), dress up and play each other in different games ... to help us get hydrated. Germany came out on top for the second year in a row (Italy won best spirit by dressing up).

Finally, our loving tradition of playing 5v2 before practice remains strong, even though Kelli Swenson manages to get hit in the face in some way almost every time we play (majority of the times Brooke Polonus is the culprit).

We hope you guys come to our last eight regular season games!! We have all conference games left, so issa bout to go downnnnnn. Our next home game is on September 27th against Green Bay.

****SPECIAL COOL NEVER BEFORE DONE ANNOUNCEMENT**** There will be a DIAMOND ring placed somewhere on Engelmann field after the game (Special shoutout to Kloiber Jewelers). Mind. Blown. Folks, this means if you simply attend our game, you have a chance of winning some fine jewelry (hint hint to all the guys out there- you never know when you’ll need it in the future). So, be there or be ... diamondless.

XOXO, Your Senior Lanths

The Lanther Diaries: Entry No. 1

Hello everyone! Welcome to the "Lanther Diaries". This is a blog about our 2017 UWM Women’s Soccer season!

For those of you who don’t know, every year we write a blog about everything that goes on throughout our season! This year, we decided to have all of the seniors be the authors of the Lanther Diaries. The seniors this year are (left to right): Sydney Senn, Maddie Tetzke, Anny West, Erin Corrigan, Mallory Geurts, Jen Eberhardy, Aubrey Krahn, Cassidy Blanchard, Anna Smalley and Kiley Kreple.
FYI – “lanther” is our team nickname ... meaning “lady panther”.

Anyways ... it’s been quite a busy August. We began our preseason on August 1st, a.k.a. Christmas in August, when we got all of our brand new, beautiful gear for the season. We were blessed with cool new tennis shoes, the new Messi cleats, t-shirts, backpacks, sweatpants, sweatshirts and much more. After we got our gear, preseason kicked in with two-a-days. Luckily, we had our first exhibition matches within the first couple weeks, against Loyola University of Chicago and Illinois State. We beat Loyola 2-0 with goals from Lolo and Maddie, but unfortunately lost to ISU 2-1. Our exhibition games were all about getting the new freshman some experience and getting our formation figured out!!
Last weekend were our first real games and overnight road trip!!! The 7-hour bus ride to Akron flew by (not really) but four square, many different bus games, and movies helped a little bit. When we arrived in Akron on Thursday night, we walked around on the field, and went back to the hotel to eat some delicious Olive Garden dinner (breadsticks were on point). On Friday, we had a very intense spikeball tourney (special shoutout to Anny for bringing her net on the trip. We even had some strangers ask if we were professional traveling spikeball players (and of course without hesitation we said yes).

Friday night we played a competitive 90 minutes versus Akron, but the ending score was 0-0. Neither team could find the back of the net in overtime. We had a ton of good chances, but weren’t able to finish them. On Saturday, we traveled to Robert Morris University, where our coach Troy played college soccer. We met Troy’s old college coach, now the head Women’s soccer coach at Robert Morris, who told us a lot about Troy’s good ole days back in college. We heard a lot of funny stories and even were able to ask him some of our own questions.

Later on Saturday, we drove into downtown Pittsburgh and did a little sightseeing until we got stuck in the middle of a thunderstorm. Pour little Gaby Zabala experienced the rain firsthand when she made a bet to run outside in the downfall. On Saturday night, we had our annual Dance Show, brought to you by Sara Petrone and Olivia Davies. A special rendition of “The Boys are Back” from High School Musical was definitely the highlight (mostly because Sara almost fell dancing on a table).

Our game against Robert Morris went very well as we finally scored some goals, beating them 2-0. It was a great win on Yenni Cuatro’s (Jen Eberhardy) 22nd birthday.

This week we are getting ready for another away weekend, with games against Southeast Missouri State on Friday and Eastern Illinois on Sunday. Friday’s game will be broadcast live on OVC Digital Network. Follow along for some lanther action!!

Catch the Lanther Diaries throughout this fall!

Watching our former teammate in the Pros

About a week ago, our women's team took an evening away from the preseason training to head to Chicago and watch our former teammate Sarah Hagen (Apple, to us) and her new team FC Kansas City take on the Chicago Red Stars.

We pulled into the parking lot only to see a host of former Panthers and their parents tailgating and getting ready for the big game.

Although Apple didn't start as her team already clinched second place in the playoffs, she came in during the second half. It was great to see her on the field again and get to watch some professional soccer. After the game, there was a giant crowd all waiting to see the former Panther. We chatted with her for a little bit before she was off signing autographs and taking pictures with some of her fans.

Here are a few photos from the night.

8 Things About Sarah Hagen

As former Panther standout Sarah Hagen continued her training with the U.S. Women's National Team last week, the team put together a video to help people get to know the rising star.

While many of her answers will come as no surprise to Panther fans who saw her play, take a look and see what "Apple" had to say.

Hagen Earns First National Team Cap

Former Milwaukee women's soccer standout Sarah "Apple" Hagen earned her first cap with the U.S. Women's National Team Friday in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sweden as part of the Algarve Cup in Portugal.

While the loss is obviously disappointing, the future looks bright for Hagen, who came on in the 81st minute and helped create numerous dangerous chances against a stingy Swedish defense, nearly creating the equalizer.

U.S. Soccer caught up with head coach Tom Sermanni, Hagen and a few other players following Friday's match from Portugal.

Hagen Shows Off Her Talents

After continuing to produce at a tremendous level for her German club team Bayern Munich, former Milwaukee Panther women's soccer standout Sarah Hagen earned a call up to train with the U.S. Women's National Team.

While Hagen has demonstrated her talents on the field time and again, the former All-American had a little fun with her fellow national team trainees, showing off how much of the German language she's picked up in her time overseas.

WSOC Match Report: St. Bonaventure

MILWAUKEE 4:0 St. Bonaventure
Sunday, Aug. 19
Engelmann Stadium (Milwaukee, Wis.)

Woman of the Match
Amy Kauffung scored a goal and assisted on another to get today's Woman of the Match Award. Her goal was a great shot, while she did a nice job of setting up Vovos' score. Just before coming off, she did well to beat her defender going to goal and missed a second score just wide.

Notes
This was the first meeting between the Panthers and St. Bonaventure ... the shutout was Forbes' 22nd career clean sheet, second-most in school history, and her second-straight to start the season ... Forbes started the 2009 season with four-straight shutouts ... Zawacki scored a goal in her first collegiate appearance, the first to do so since Sarah Hagen in 2008 ... Kauffung started 21-of-22 games last season (primarily as a defender), but did not score a point ... Behnke's goal was her second career and her first game-winner ... Vovos' goal was her first since Oct. 26, 2009 at Green Bay ... Henschel's first win at UWM is also the 291st of his career (men and women) ... WSOC Match Report: #24 South Carolina

MILWAUKEE 0:0 #24 SOUTH CAROLINA
Friday, Aug. 17
Engelmann Stadium (Milwaukee, Wis.)

Woman of the Match
Jamie Forbes made eight saves for shutout, including a couple big saves to maintain her 21st career clean sheet.

Some notable performances from Kelly Lewers, Helen Steinhauser and Demi Price. I was impressed by Lewers fitness and edge on the field. Steinhauser was everywhere in the midfield and played great. Price coming on seemed like a turning point, giving the Panthers confidence and more energy.

Notes
Six players played all 110 minutes (Forbes, Bestwina, Scott, Kaul, Condon, Steinhauser and Lewers) ... UWM now has eight results (2 wins, 6 draws) in 34 all-time games against ranked opponents ... this was the first meeting between the Panthers and SC, while Milwaukee is now 4-6-3 all-time against SEC teams ... the shutout was Forbes' 21st career clean sheet, second-most in school history ... Bestwina and O'Donnell made their first collegiate starts

Hagen Helps Bayern Munich To German Cup Title

Former Panther Sarah Hagen scored the game-winner and assisted on an insurance goal to help Bayern Munich to a 2-0 victory over FFC Frankfurt in the German Cup final Saturday in Cologne.
Hagen's converted a header off a corner kick in the 65th minute to break a scoreless draw. She also set up Ivana Rudelic in the 90th minute by winning a header in the midfield and putting Rudelic 1v1 with the keeper.
The Cup title is Munich's first and came against a side in FFC Frankfurt that has won the cup 13 times since its inception in 1981.
See highlights of the match here. There is a photo gallery here and a post-game interview with Hagen below.
The Cup win continues a strong season for Hagen and Bayern Munich. Hagen signed a two-year contract extension with the club, which is in sixth place in the Frauen Bundesliga. She has scored a pair of goals during league play and added four goals in two cup games. She set Munich through to the finals with a hat trick in the semifinals last month.
Hagen was also one of three former Panthers plying their trades in professional leagues that we featured at uwmpanthers.com last week.

Apple Puts Bayern Munich in German Cup Final

Sarah Hagen netted her first professional hat trick Monday, scoring three goals and assisting on a fourth in Bayern Munich's 5-2 win over Hamburg in the semifinals of the Frauen DFB-Pokal. Munich moves on to the final May 12 in Cologne, where they will play FFC Frankfurt.

For a nice recap (in English), check out a story over at Wisconsin Soccer Central. The story also includes embedded highlights from the match that were posted on Bayern Munich's website. At the end of the video is an interview with Hagen.

Hagen has six goals so far for Munich, with a pair in Frauen Bundesliga action. The team is back in action April 15 against SC 07 Bad Neuenahr. Munich has picked up nine out of 12 points since Hagen has joined the team and currently tied for sixth in the league table, just two points out of fifth.

Milwaukee v. Illinois State Match Report

#15/11 Milwaukee 3, Illinois State 1
NCAA Tournament First Round
Nov. 12, 2011 – Engelmann Stadium (Milwaukee, Wis.)

Woman of the Match: Sarah Hagen. I chose Apple for the game, but she is only representative of how the team played tonight. They all came out on a mission and Hagen set the tone with her decisive goal in just the fourth minute. She also had a flurry of chances late, having two point-blank headers being saved shortly before setting up goal No. 2 with a blast from the top of the box.

NOTES: Hagen has extended her own school records of points in a season (now 58) … Keara Thompson’s assist was her 12th of the season and tied for second-most in school history … Hagen is now 10th with her ninth assist of the season … she is also up to 26 career assists, tied for second-most in school history … Thompson is fifth with 25 … Thompson is also up to fifth in school history with 61 career points and tied for sixth with 18 goals … Hagen has a school-record 11 game-winning goals this season, equal to the second-most in school history for a career … Thompson tied a school record with her 86th game played … Hagen is third with 85 games, but has started every game and is tied for second with 85 starts … Jamie Forbes’ shutout was her 11th of the season, third-most in school history, and the 20th of her career, which is second … she also broke the school record with her 18th win this season … the Panthers broke the school record of 18 wins, set in 2008 … they also had previously advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round after ties (and PK shootouts) in 2005 and 2006 … their NCAA record is now 1-8-2 … Milwaukee is also 7-3-2 all-time against Illinois State … Hagen is now ninth in NCAA Division I history with 92 career goals and is now 17th with 210 points … the attendance was 757, the fourth-largest crown in team history.

Up Next: The Panthers take on Ohio State Friday in the NCAA Tournament Second Round. Location is TBA.

Milwaukee v. Wright State Match Report

#15 Milwaukee 5, Wright State 1
Horizon League Championship
