MBB Updates

A few updates for you as we have landed safely in Oxford, Ohio ...

This game is a homecoming of sorts for Bud Haidet, who went to school here at Miami and worked here for quite some time before coming to Milwaukee. He gave us a bit of a tour as we pulled on to campus ... took the microphone and everything. We are also staying on campus at the Miami Inn - the baseball stadium is right out my window. And, Bud has us hooked up at an Italian buffet for dinner tonight.

Tim Van Vooren and Mickey Leach from Fox 6 were out at practice Monday working on a few Panther things, including a feature on James Eayrs. That feature is scheduled to air tonight during the 9 o'clock newscast. I know they have a run a couple of other items already this week, including Rob Jeter's Monday practice plan being written on a paper plate (times really are tough).

Speaking of TV stuff, the Rob Jeter Show is making its December appearance on Sports 32 tonight. It is scheduled to air at 5 tonight, with a re-air later in the evening. Check your local listings, as they say.

Also, our contest here in Oxford is the first game of UWM's Time Warner Cable Sports 32 package for this year. Tipoff is at 6 tomorrow. That means Daron Sutton should be here any moment to pretend he doesn't like winters in Arizona.

Finally, in non-league action tonight, Butler plays at Bradley, so it is a good chance to see how two future Panther opponents look against each other. Bradley, of course, is UWM's next game after the Miami contest.

Panthers Ranked 24th In Final NSCAA Soccer Poll

In the final NSCAA national poll of the 2008 season, the Panthers found themselves nationally-ranked at season's end for the first time as a Division I program. UWM finished 24th on the strength of an 18-3-2 season. The Panthers won a ninth-straight league title, captured the league tournament title and advanced to a seventh NCAA Tournament.

Milwaukee, which was 16th in the final preseason poll, had previously received votes in the final poll of the 2005 and 2006 seasons. The last time UWM was ranked at season's end was 1989, when records show the Panthers were 19th in the final NCAA Division II ISCAA poll.

The release of the final poll is the latest good news for the Panthers, which saw Sarah Teegarden earn All-America Third Team honors from the NSCAA over the weekend. She was joined by two others on the All-Region First Team in Nicole Sperl and Sarah Hagen. Erin Kane was selected to the second team.

Hagen was selected to the TopDrawerSoccer.com All-Rookie Team earlier this season.

Two more publications have yet to publish their All-Americans in Soccer Buzz and Soccer America. Ginny Graczyk in 2006 was the program's only Soccer Buzz All-America, while the publication honored Teegarden (honorable mention) and Kane (third team) as Freshman All-Americans in 2005. Kane was a first-team All-American according to Soccer America that same year.

Also, with the crowning of a national champion, the NCAA's final statistics report was published with Hagen finishing second in the nation with 24 goals and fourth with 54 points. Two goals by North Carolina's Casey Nogiuera in the title game sealed first place in both categories (25 goals, 58 points). Hagen was also third in goals per game (1.043) and sixth in points per game (2.35). The Panthers as a team also finished seventh in the nation in goals (65) and goals per game (2.83), ninth in winning percentage (.826) and in the top 45 in both GAA and shutout percentage.

As usual I will be courtside, providing you with a live "web log", or "blog" as the kids say, of today's women's basketball game against Washington State. The Panthers are coming off a 71-69, double-overtime heartbreaker at Wisconsin their last time out. The Cougars are 4-2 and have won two-straight.

After a dicey drive back from Champaign last night, I'll be courtside at the U.S. Cellular Arena today as the Panthers look to make it two-straight in league play when they take on Wright State.

Live Blog: MBB vs. Detroit

I'll have a live blog tonight as the Panthers open Horizon League play against Detroit at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

The Panthers enter tonight's game at 3-4 while Detroit is 2-3. Both teams have suffered losses to BCS foes, with UWM falling to Wisconsin, Marquette and Iowa State while Detroit has lost to Purdue and DePaul.

Live Blog: WBB @ Wisconsin

I will be courtside during tonight's women's basketball game against Wisconsin. The Panthers are looking for their fourth-straight win and the first over the Badgers since 1992. That win also came in Madison. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.

I have double and triple-checked, and had Scott Warras re-check, the math and Traci Edwards is 15 points from tying Maria Viall's UWM career scoring mark of 1,867 points.
