UWM Heads To Chicago As Spring Slate Continues
The UWM volleyball team should face plenty of challenges when it heads to Chicago for its second weekend of spring play.
This weekend’s event, the Three Wise Men Tournament at Loyola, features Big Ten foes Michigan State and Iowa as well as Northern Iowa, Valparaiso and Southern Illinois.
The Panthers will open play in Pool 4 with Marquette, Northern Illinois and Eastern Illinois. After a round-robin competition Saturday morning at the Gentile Center, every team will advance to afternoon play based on its performance in the morning.
The morning session will include two sets to 25 points in each match, while the afternoon session will include one, 30-minute timed set for each contest.
UWM opened the competitive portion of the spring season with a home tournament this past weekend. Milwaukee won all three of the sets it played against Green Bay while winning two of the three it played against Northern Illinois.

Kane Makes Athletica Roster
Erin Kane, Milwaukee's starting goalkeeper for the last four seasons, has made the opening day roster with St. Louis Athletica of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). Kane was invited to training camp after a strong tryout with the club and will now start the season as one of three goalkeepers on the roster.
Kane is joined in the Athletica nets by U.S. National Team keeper Hope Solo and Jillian Loyden. She is the first Panther woman to break camp with a professional team in the States since Lisa Krzykowski. Krzykowski played with Atlanta and San Diego of the now-defunct WUSA and was the first woman from the state of Wisconsin to play professional soccer.
In her UWM career, Kane set school records for minutes, GAA, shutouts and wins. She holds minutes, GAA and shutout records for the Horizon League and is the only GK in league history to earn all-league first team honors all four years.

Live Blog: Baseball at Valparaiso - Horizon League Opener
Welcome to Valparaiso, Indiana, for today's game between Milwaukee and Valparaiso...
We arrived a few hours ago and hopped right off the bus. I received a tour of the facility from Valpo's SID, Ryan, and it's quite nice ... team room, TV room, kitchen, laundry, training, batting cages, locker room, you name it.
Game time is 3 pm, which is about 15 minutes away. The Crusaders are 7-11 and off to a 2-1 start in league play.
Milwaukee's line-up will be: Andy Gerhartz (2b), Cole Kraft (SS), Josh Groves (C), Ben Long (DH), Shawn Wozniak (1B), Shaun Wegner (RF), Tim Patzman (LF), Paul Hoenecke (3B) and Doug Dekoning (CF).
On the mound fort UWM, senior Brad Lusti, off to a slow 0-2 start in 5 appearances.

More Men's Basketball Postseason Honors
A few of the in-state postseason men’s college basketball honors have been released
The Journal Sentinel put together their all-state team, which was rightly dominated by Marquette. But, UWM’s Tone Boyle earned newcomer of the year honors. His biggest competition was probably teammate James Eayrs, though Jimmy Butler from Marquette made a late charge.
Meanwhile, the issue of Inside Wisconsin Sports that is on newsstands now honors three Panthers on the all-state team. Boyle and Avery Smith were each named to the magazine’s second team while Eayrs earned honorable mention honors.
These honors are in addition to the recognition Boyle and Eayrs already received from the Horizon League after the regular season. Both were named to the league’s all-newcomer team while Boyle also earned second-team all-league honors.
Boyle led the Panthers in scoring and reached double figures 22 times this season. He also made 66 three-pointers on the year while scoring 20 or more points four times. The junior battled a back injury during the final three weeks of the season but, prior to his injury, he reached double figures in 14-straight games and made a three-pointer in 20-straight contests.
Eayrs pushed his scoring average up to 11.2 points per game with a stellar run over the final month of the season. In fact, after moving to the starting lineup Feb. 7, the junior averaged 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. He finished with a total of 17 double-figure point outings, including five 20-point games, and he had three double-doubles.
Smith returned to start 25 games this season, finishing second on the team in scoring. He had 14 double-figure outings this year and 40 total in his career. Smith also wound up with 14, 20-point outings, including six this season. He finished his collegiate career with 958 points, 333 rebounds and 107 steals.

Three Panthers Earn All-State Awards
Traci Edwards, Lindsay Laur and Turquoise McCain earned all-state honors from Inside Wisconsin Sports Magazine this month when the publication announced its basketball awards.
Edwards was named to the first team, and has a nice, rather large picture accompanying the article, while Laur and McCain were named to the third team. The teams are made up of players from the four Division I teams in the state.
Edwards led the Horizon League in scoring and rebounding for the third-straight year and repeated as league player of the year. She was also named a regional finalist for All-America honors from the WBCA earlier this week. The Menasha, Wis., native led the Panthers to the league championship game last Sunday and capped her career as the all-time leading scorer in UWM, Wisconsin and Horizon League history.
Laur emerged as a team leader down the stretch this season, posting a strong finish to the season. She found herself second on the team in scoring and rebounding by season's end, averaging 9.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. She led the team in three-pointers and was second to Edwards with five double-doubles.
McCain was long considered the team's emotional leader. Alongside Edwards and Stephanie Schell, she was a team captain and set the tempo on the floor with her all-out effort. She averaged 6.6 points and 4.4 rebounds during her senior season.
Milwaukee also had some connections to the Division III All-State team, which featured UW-Whitewater's Tiffany Morton and Edgewood's Megan Scheele. Morton played for UWM during the 2005-06 season before transfering to UWW.
Scheele became the second player in state history, after Edwards, to get 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds for her career. What truly joins that two is that both players reached both milestones in the same game. Edwards eclipsed both marks Jan. 8 at Youngstown State and Scheele did it Feb. 12.
Edgewood's SID office did some research and found that none of the other 8 Division III players that reached 2,000/1,000 had done both in the same game.
