Game #16 – Milwaukee 76, Butler 52
Player of the Game - When you accomplish something no one else has since 1993, you probably win this honor going away. Kaylon Williams had the first triple-double by a Panther since Marc Mitchell had two of them during the 1992-93 campaign, collecting 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. His 10th assist came first, on a pass to Tone Boyle at the top of the key for a three. Then, rebound #10 and points 8-10 came on the same series. He chased down an offensive rebound during a long Panther possession and eventually buried a staredown three over Matt Howard as the shot clock ran down. On top of it all, Williams had just one turnover in 38 minutes.
Turning Point Matt Howard kept Butler in the game with 12 first-half points. But, he committed three fouls in the first 2:11 of the second half. The UWM lead was at nine when he left the game and at 18 when he returned about five minutes later. If Butler had any chance to be in the game, it evaporated during that five-minute span.
Stat That Mattered - There were a lot of good numbers to look at for the Panthers Monday night, but it is hard to overlook UWM’s 55.3 percent shooting. Milwaukee made 15-of-24 from inside the arc, consistently getting good looks in and around the paint. That was complemented by a solid 11-of-23 from three-point range.
The Notebook - Marc Mitchell is actually the only other UWM player to collect a Division I triple-double, having done it twice during the 1992-93 season … Kaylon Williams is the first Panther to have 10 or more assists in a game since Cyrus Caldwell had 11 against Fairleigh Dickinson in 1997 … this was the second time in four games UWM has had two players with 20 or more points, as Anthony Hill had 22 and Tony Meier 20 … Meier has now had three 20-point games in his last eight outings … Hill has now scored 18, 21, 15 and 22 points in his last four games against Butler … Milwaukee hit double figures in three-pointers made for the fourth time in six games … Tone Boyle has made 18 three-pointers in his last four games … UWM’s 55.3 percent shooting clip is its second-best of the season, and the fourth time the Panthers have shot better than 50 percent … Milwaukee won back-to-back games for the first time since winning three-straight Nov. 14-20 … Milwaukee and Butler have now split their last 22 meetings … not only did UWM end Butler’s 22-game Horizon League regular season winning streak, but the Panthers have now been responsible for the last two regular season league Butler losses … this was the largest margin of victory ever by the Panthers over Butler … Milwaukee is now 78-29 at The Cell since 2002-03, and is 73-18 in regular season league home contests over the last 11-plus seasons.

Top 10 Moments of Milwaukee Athletics in 2010*

Just before the end of 2010, I decided to make a list of the top 10 moments of the year in Panther Athletics. Well, these are one man's humble opinion of the top moments. No voting. No debate. Just me and my memories of the year. Click through and you can see some of the highlights of the year that was.
First, some disclaimers: I generally favor my sports. Sorry... it's just how I roll. Championships are great, but this is not a list of championships. Those are great, but other moments may be better. Lastly, I don't let losing ruin a great moment (my sports career was filled with losing, so I don't let it bother me).

10. November 27 - Marquette 75, Men's Basketball 72
I know it’s a loss. But, I went to UWM (Class of 2003), so seeing a game against Marquette that was that close, and with that atmosphere, was amazing.
9. September 1 – Men's Soccer 4, Marquette 2
This is not a trend. The Panthers took back the Milwaukee Cup with a thrilling 4-2 win over the Golden Eagles at Valley Fields. It was a great start to the season.
8. December 4 – Lindsay Laur’s 1,000th Point
The sports I cover tend to carry a bit more wait with me, but 1,000 career points is a remarkable achievement. Lindsay Laur joined the club against Northern Iowa and is working her way up the career scoring and rebounding charts. She has a unique skill set in the annals of UWM basketball, put fully on display against Wright State on New Year's Eve when she had 26 points, 17 rebounds and 6 three-pointers.
7. October 1 – Texas 4, Women's Soccer 3 (OT)
In my experience in Texas, whether or not everything is better... I cannot say. But, this was a Texas-sized score in an exciting shootout with the Longhorns. The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but scored goals to tie the game at 2-2 and 3-3 (in the 85th minute) before UT prevailed in overtime. Sarah Hagen had two goals and assisted on the third to tie the Horizon League and UWM record for career goals.
6. February 27 – Men’s Swimming & Diving wins Horizon League Championship
Despite not winning an individual title during the meet, the Panthers led from the second day on and claimed their first Horizon League Championship since 2000. See the celebration here.
5-4. February 28 and May 2 – Milwaukee wins all four Track & Field league titles
Only three teams has one program won all four men's/women's/indoor/outdoor Horizon League Championships. Those teams:
2001 Milwaukee Panthers
2007 Milwaukee Panthers
2010 Milwaukee Panthers (1, 2, 3, 4).
3. May 30 – Baseball wins Horizon League Championship
A gutsy pitching performance highlighted the Panthers' 4-2 win over No. 1 seed Wright State in the second league title game. Milwaukee fell to the Raiders earlier in the tournament, but knocked off WSU in back-to-back games to claim the championship. After throwing 150 pitches three days earlier, Chad Pierce returned to give up just two runs in six innings. The offense was on board with 14 runs against Wright State in the first championship game and four in the second.
2. November 7 - Women's Soccer 5, Butler 0
How do you exact revenge from a team that ended your league-record 22-game league winning streak and 37-game home league unbeaten streak during the regular season? Beat them 5-0 in the Horizon League Championship game on their home field. The Panthers did that. They won their third-straight league tournament crown with a road rout and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the 8th time.
NOTE: The previous time UWM was not a No. 1 seed in the league tournament was 2008. That year, Milwaukee beat Wright State in the semifinals and routed the top seed on its home field... then it was 6-2 at Loyola. I love it when a plan comes together.
1. October 8 – Women's Soccer 5, Valparaiso 0
There were a number of factors that made this my number one choice:
• First game played on Engelmann Field this season after the first 12 games were played anywhere but Engelmann. All told, the Panthers were on the road for nine of those games. The field turned out great.
• 683 people packed into Engelmann Field on a Friday night makes for a great atmosphere regardless of the game.
• The women's team was participating in another successful Pink Out weekend to benefit breast cancer.
• Sarah Hagen entered the game needing one goal to become the Horizon league and Milwaukee's all-time leading goal scorer. She didn't disappoint, getting the first of two goals in the 20th minute (lots of coverage at that link).
I conceded earlier where my biases lie, but it was a good game and an electrifying atmosphere. I thought it was the top moment of the year, but then again I'm partial to soccer, night games and Engelmann Field. Great things happen when those things come together.

Player of the Game - Panther Freshmen. Three rookies scored in double-figures, led by the 15 points from both Courtney Lindfors and Angela Rodriguez. Kimee Chandler added 10 points in her first career start. The trio combined for 40 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 blocks and 5 steals.
Turning Point - 16:33 in the first half. It was 7-6 before a 24-7 Detroit run put the game out of reach. The Titans added an 18-2 run for a game-high 26-point lead. Milwaukee fought back within 12 late, but would get no closer.
Stat That Mattered - 10 threes for Detroit. The combo of Dominique Dixon and Cherridy Thornton combined for all 10 threes for Detroit. They hit seven in the first half to stifle the Panthers any time they looked to claw back into the game.
The Notebook - Lindsay Laur’s double-double (20 p, 12 r) is her fourth-straight, the second-longest streak in school history (tying Traci Edwards, 2005-06). Erica Young holds the school record (5 games) … Chandler is the ninth Panther to notch a double-digit game this season … Lindfors’ 15 points are her most since 35 points at Chicago State … the last Panther opponent to score 30 points in a game was Tiffany Webb (31 points), Feb. 27, 2003 … Dixon’s 32 are its most since Chantelle Anderson had 35 Nov. 30, 2001 … the last time an opponent scored 90 points was Nov. 30, 2005, when DePaul had 90.

Player of the Game - Kaylon Williams did a little bit of everything, even overcoming heavy foul trouble to be on the court when it mattered. Williams scored a UWM-high 17 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists in 30 minutes. He made four 3-pointers, none bigger than the three that tied the game at the end of regulation. And, he played with a confidence and command on the court that helped the Panthers fight through a number of difficult situations over the 45 minutes.
Turning Point There were plenty, but the five-point run that made the difference included Anthony Hill and Tone Boyle. Hill didn’t get a lot done offensively against Eli Holman, but his inside basket with 2:11 remaining in overtime brought Milwaukee within 79-78. Boyle then converted a three on UWM’s next possession and the Panthers never gave the lead back.
Stat That Mattered - You don’t have to look much further than the three-point shooting, as the Titans conceded those shots to the Panthers and they finally cashed in. Overall, Milwaukee made 16-of-37, with Milwaukee making 13-of-24 in the second half and overtime. UWM missed 10 of its first 11 three-point tries.
